The 2018 Farm Bill (H.R. 2) is scheduled to be voted on in the House this week and it already contains several amendments that will dramatically weaken laws meant to protect animals. In addition, AAVS has heard of some dangerous amendments expected to be proposed during floor ‘debate.’
One such amendment will further weaken Animal Welfare Act (AWA) protections for animals in labs. Authored by Rep. Rouzer (NC), it would eliminate annual unannounced inspections of animal research labs by the USDA, pushing them off to every three years. This is a direct attack on a key provision of the AWA, and citizens, who expect basic oversight of the animal experimentation industry.
Other dangerous amendments would:
- Prevent state standards for animal welfare, including restrictions on gestation crates for pigs, tail-docking of cattle, horse slaughter, and puppy mills.
- Reduce protections for endangered wildlife.
- Condone pesticide poisoning of species listed under the Endangered Species Act.
The 2018 Farm Bill is bad for animals, the environment, and humans. Because the House is expected to vote on the Farm Bill this week, time is of the essence. So, we are urging you to CALL your Representative today. Tell him/her vote NO on the Farm Bill!
