Wild is Beautiful –
Tomorrow is National Bird Day and in celebration of these amazing animals, I encourage you to spend some time listening to your neighborhood finches, chickadees, and other songbirds. If you listen, you’ll marvel at how they communicate with each other through song—it’s beautiful!
But did you know that this special ability is also why researchers use songbirds in neurology and cognitive experiments? They are also exploited in agriculture research, the exotic pet trade, and by indiscriminate bird breeders. Because of this, AAVS dedicated an entire issue of our AV Magazine to birds, and we want to give you exclusive access this edition, so that on National Bird Day, you learn about these amazing animals and the need for more avian advocacy.
The other day, my foster cat was sitting in a window ‘chirping’ at the neighborhood birds. I sat with him, watching and listening. A chickadee called to another across the street, who responded as if to say, “I’m here!” A bright red cardinal landed on a dwarf spruce and then helped himself to some birdseed….
On this National Bird Day, take some time to enjoy the birds (and the AV Magazine). You’ll be glad you did!
