What a happy day, thanks to the AAVS community! You helped make this dream come true.

It was 12 years ago that the seven baby chimpanzees arrived at the Chimp Haven sanctuary. Riley was not even two years old. Arden had just turned four. Unlike nearly all animals bred for use in research, they had not been traumatized by separation from their mothers. The promise of sanctuary life was so hopeful because they were not burdened by past pain and suffering.

AAVS immediately decided to ensure that their futures would be secure and pledged to support them for the rest of their lives. So every year, on Valentine’s Day, we celebrate that commitment by sending an annual payment from our Total Lifetime Care (TLC) Fund for their costs of care.

That care includes everything they need to thrive at Chimp Haven, from nutritious food, medical care, behavioral support, enriched environments, and the most wonderful caregivers you can imagine.

Now in their teen years, the chimpanzees are settling into their personalities. Jimmy Dean, now 15, and once thought to be headed to become alpha male, seems to find more satisfaction in the role of protective and fun uncle with the youngest chimp in his social group. Meanwhile, Riley, at 13, is thoroughly enjoying the role of alpha in his social group. He charges across his habitat to make sure everyone knows he is energized and ready to play, grab up the biggest fruit treats, and poke his nose in everyone’s business. Riley’s friend Onyx, an independent 14 year-old girl, seems to be a budding musician, seizing on large barrels provided for enrichment, to express herself as a drummer. But in quieter moments, you can find Onyx close to her mom, Bumble.

The other chimps supported by AAVS–Quilla, Diane, Arden, and Mason–are also thriving, with best friends and favorite activities.
